Keepmoat Backs Brownfield Regeneration Drive

Top 10 UK homebuilder Keepmoat became a strategic partner of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) in 2023, pledging to deliver 4,000 additional new homes across the region.

As part of the partnership, Keepmoat has committed to:

  • Boost housebuilding by 50% across the West Midlands
  • Achieve net zero carbon emissions on all brownfield site developments
  • Deliver homes across a range of tenure types, supporting diverse housing needs

The initiative has created new jobs and generated many apprenticeship opportunities, with a strong emphasis on local employment. At least 70% of the workforce has been and will continue to be recruited from within a 30-mile radius, while building materials and supplies will be sourced from West Midlands-based businesses wherever possible.

A recent site includes a 600-unit scheme in Wednesbury.

The 32-acre site, equivalent to 32 football pitches, has remained derelict for over 40 years, following its previous use as a waste plant, foundry, and hospital. Around 25% of the new homes planned for the site will be designated as affordable housing.

Before construction can begin, Keepmoat and its partners will submit a planning application for a major land remediation programme to address decades of contamination. The clean-up process is expected to take two to three years, with full development of the site projected to span eight to ten years.

West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker welcomed Keepmoat’s appointment, describing it as a significant step forward. He also confirmed that the Environment Agency is prioritising the site’s remediation plans.
