Bovis Wins £60m Portman Square Job

Bovis, part of Vistry Group, has been appointed to deliver the redevelopment of a 1920s office building at 43-45 Portman Square in London, marking the latest in a string of significant project wins for the firm.

The £60m contract will see the existing seven-storey building in Marylebone, just north of Oxford Street, refurbished and extended. The scheme includes the addition of two new floors and a pavilion structure on level 10, along with ground-floor retail units, communal workspaces, and a new atrium.

The redevelopment, led by developer Bentall Green Oak on behalf of the Welput Fund, has been designed by Danish practice Henning Larsen and received planning approval from Westminster City Council in May.

Known initially as Hesketh House, the building was designed by Messrs. Joseph Architects in 1928. It underwent partial reconstruction in 1996. General Demolition has been preparing the site since spring, ahead of the main construction works.

Who is working on the scheme?

The project team comprises Opera as the project manager, CHP as the cost consultant, Elliott Wood as the structural engineer, and planning consultancy DP9.

This win adds to Bovis’s growing pipeline, which was acquired earlier this year by US private equity firm Atlas Holdings. Other recent contracts include the £330m 60 Gracechurch Street office development for Sellar, due to begin next year, and a £200m office tower near the British Museum for BC Group.

Bovis is also in the running, alongside Sir Robert McAlpine, for a £150m office project on Shaftesbury Avenue being developed by Dutch firm Edge.

Jacob Kurek, Global Market Director at Henning Larsen said:

It is a true privilege to reimagine an iconic 1920’s building into an inviting, collaborative workspace that meets contemporary standards. We are proud to partner with our ambitious client, BGO, on this project, which we hope will show a vision that both honours the history and embraces the future of the Portman Estate Conservation Area in London.
