The Home Builders Federation‘s Technical Conference took place in Birmingham, where they looked at how we can focus on the future of housebuilding in a sustainable way under the environmental and net zero agenda.
Richard Lankshear, Future Homes Hub’s Programme Director, emphasised the industry’s opportunity to create smart, sustainable homes suited for future needs. He discussed the significant changes housebuilders face under the net-zero agenda and the Hub’s role in addressing long-term challenges like carbon, water, and biodiversity. Lankshear highlighted the government’s focus on building sustainable, low-carbon developments, in line with the Hub’s goals outlined in its “One Plan” manifesto.
Julie Spinks from Water Regs UK discussed integrating water efficiency into the environmental incentives framework, while Adam Swaine from TriConnex highlighted the pressure on the electric grid, with the National Grid reviewing project connections.
Paul Newman of the Structural Timber Association (STA) discussed the Timber in Construction Roadmap, focusing on innovation and skills challenges, with concerns about government support under a new administration. Other speakers covered regulatory updates, modern construction methods, safety reforms following Grenfell, sustainable drainage systems, and supply chain challenges in relation to the Future Homes Standard.
