Berkeley Offer a Chance to Visit Their Construction Sites

After the New Homes Debate last week discussing the skill shortage in the industry, it’s great to see one of our Foundation Clients, Berkeley Group, holding an Open Doors Event starting today. This initiative gives the public a chance to see how buildings and homes are built on a live construction site, with many opportunities across England, Wales and Scotland; over 130 to be precise.

With the Government announcing a target of building 300,000 new homes a year, the industry has struggled greatly to find workers to help meet these needs. In the most recent State of Trade Survey, The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) found that 68% of firms are struggling to hire bricklayers, 63% struggle to hire carpenters and joiners and 48% struggle to hire plumbers and HVAC traders.

It is an important time to inspire the next generation to want a career in Construction and Housebuilding and promote how fantastic and progressive the industry is. Companies need to make their Apprenticeship schemes more attractive by increasing pay and offering a clear progression path.

At Thomas Gray we have launched our new division, Workplace Solutions, to help fill those skill shortage roles by finding candidates with transferable skills that can be used in the Housebuilding and Construction industries. We help candidates realise their potential in other sectors while encouraging our clients to look beyond job title and see how a candidates skills and experience can be valuable.
